Song-writing, performance and recording workshops engaged marginalised young women in the Song Book project as part of program activities in 2012 and 2013. A music mentorship initiative provided young women experiencing isolation and mental health issues as a result of the impact of violence in their lives with a supportive environment in which to explore song-writing as a medium for creative expression. It also provided these young women with a platform from which to present their songs to broader audiences as part of International Women’s Day in March 2013 and NAIDOC Week in July 2013. At the same time, young women from special needs support units at Dapto, Figtree and Oak Flats High Schools composed their own song lyrics and performed as part of a broader inter-generational forum event in October 2013. CACD artists were Denise Thomas and Carolyn Nowaczyk.
